Wheaton blanks visiting Clark in NEWMAC action
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team won for the eighth time in its last nine matches, blanking New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University, 9-0 on Saturday at the Clark Tennis Courts. The Lyons improved to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the visiting Cougars fell to 2-5 and 0-3.
Wheaton quickly pulled out to a 3-0 lead, yielding a total of seven games during a trio of doubles victories. Senior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and junior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) blanked their foes in the second position.
At the top spot, senior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and sophomore Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) notched an 8-3 victory, while juniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) were triumphant by an 8-4 count at number three.
In singles play, five Lyon victories came at the expense of a total of just 10 games lost, with Little and Altman each blanking their opponents in the second and sixth positions, respectively. Oliver earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at one, Hudgins downed his third-slot foe, 6-2, 6-3, and Krantz nabbed a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at five.
Poulin shut out his fourth-position opponent before dropping the second set, 6-3. He won the super tiebreaker by a 10-2 final to round out Wheaton's singles victories.
The Lyons complete a run of three matches in as many days tomorrow when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 11:00 a.m.
