NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College men's tennis senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) advanced to championship rounds in both singles and doubles play during Sunday's Wheaton Invitational on the Clark Tennis Courts.
The four-team invite was comprised of Division II squads Merrimack College and Stonehill College and Division III institutions Wheaton and Colby-Sawyer College.
Krantz won a trio of matches before falling in the final round of the open singles draw, blanking his Colby-Sawyer opponent in the first round before besting two Stonehill players, one by an 8-6 count and the other by default. Krantz eventually fell to Merrimack freshman Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), 6-1, 6-3.
On his way to facing Krantz, Barnhart posted an 8-4 victory over Lyon junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering). In other singles action, freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif.) notched an 8-1 triumph against a Stonehill foe before dropping an 8-2 decision to a Merrimack player.
At first doubles, seniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) and Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) were victorious by an 8-5 count over a Stonehill tandem before suffering an 8-4 setback to a Merrimack duo.
At second doubles, sophomore Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y.) blanked the opposition from Stonehill in the opening round before falling shot of Merrimack, 8-4.
Wheaton is back in action two weekends from now for the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament on September 24-26 at Williams College.
