Lyons blank visiting Emerson in season opener for both teams

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team posted a pair of doubles shutouts while surrendering just one game apiece in four singles matches en route to 9-0 victory over visiting Emerson College during each team's season opener on Saturday in Beard Field House.  Today's match marked the earliest start to a spring season for both squads.

The Lyons entered this afternoon's action ranked 20th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Wheaton senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) and freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) combined for an 8-0 blanking at second doubles while surrendering one game apiece at third and fourth singles, respectively.

Seniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) and Josh Fisher (Ridgefield, Conn./Wooster School) sided for an 8-0 triumph in the third doubles slot, as Fisher was playing in the first dual match of his career.

Rounding out the doubles wins were senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) and junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering), who teamed up for an 8-4 victory in the top spot.

In singles play, Oliver and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) gave up one game each in the second and fifth positions, respectively.  Krantz notched a 6-1, 6-4 win at number one, while sophomore Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) collected a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the sixth slot.
