NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team posted a pair of doubles shutouts while surrendering just one game apiece in four singles matches en route to 9-0 victory over visiting Emerson College during each team's season opener on Saturday in Beard Field House. Today's match marked the earliest start to a spring season for both squads.
The Lyons entered this afternoon's action ranked 20th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Wheaton senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) and freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) combined for an 8-0 blanking at second doubles while surrendering one game apiece at third and fourth singles, respectively.
Seniors Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) and Josh Fisher (Ridgefield, Conn./Wooster School) sided for an 8-0 triumph in the third doubles slot, as Fisher was playing in the first dual match of his career.
In singles play, Oliver and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) gave up one game each in the second and fifth positions, respectively. Krantz notched a 6-1, 6-4 win at number one, while sophomore Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) collected a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the sixth slot.
The Lyons head to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for their annual spring trip beginning on Sunday, March 13, against Rhodes College of Tennessee at 12:00 p.m.
