HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The Wheaton College men's tennis team fell for the second time in as many days, dropping an 8-1 decision to Ithaca College during a battle between regionally-ranked squads on Monday afternoon.
Ranked 20th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Lyons fell to 1-2 on the season, while the 13th-ranked Bombers evened their record at 1-1.
Senior Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) earned Wheaton's lone point with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at number-five singles.
In other singles action, freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) split two sets by counts of 5-7 and 7-6 before falling 10-3 in the super breaker at fourth. Junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) lost 6-4, 6-3 in the second spot, while senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) fell 6-3, 6-3 at number three.
In doubles action, Oliver and senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) dropped a close 9-8 decision in the top spot. Altman and freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) suffered an 8-5 setback in the second slot, while Poulin and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) lost 8-4 at number three.
The Lyons are back in action tomorrow morning against Mississippi College.
