Lyons edged by Mississippi College, 5-4
HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The Wheaton College men's tennis team continued its annual southern trip with a hard-fought 5-4 loss to Mississippi College on Tuesday morning.
Ranked 20th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Lyons are now 1-3 on the season, while the Choctaws improved to 8-1.
Junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) led Wheaton with victories in singles and doubles action. Oliver combined with senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) for an 8-5 victory in the top doubles position. He picked up another point for the Blue and White with a 6-3, 7-6 win at first singles.
Freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) surrendered just two games during a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at number four, while senior Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) notched a 6-2 win in his opening set at five before overcoming a 3-0 deficit for a 7-5 victory during the second set.
At sixth singles, freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) split the first two sets before falling 10-6 in a super tiebreaker.
The Lyons will look for their first win of the trip during their final match tomorrow morning against Division II University of Illinois at Springfield at 8:00 a.m.
