HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The Wheaton College men's tennis team suffered its fourth loss of the season, dropping a tightly-contested 6-3 decision on Wednesday morning to Division II University of Illinois at Springfield.
Ranked 20th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Lyons slipped to 1-4.
Wheaton earned its three points in singles play while losing three doubles matches. Four of the six singles matches went to super tiebreakers, with the Lyons taking two.
Senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) won a 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 decision at number three. In the fourth slot, freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) dropped his first set before coming back for a 2-6, 7-6, 10-5 victory. Senior Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) posted the final Wheaton point with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at number five.
Senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) and junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) lost in super breakers with Krantz falling by a 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 count at number two and Oliver suffering a 1-6, 6-3, 6-10 loss at one.
Wheaton returns to the courts next Tuesday for a road match at non-conference foe Salem State University.
