NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's tennis team is enjoying its longest winning streak in six years, as the Lyons emerged victorious for the eighth straight match following a 5-0 shutout of visiting Salve Regina University on Wednesday afternoon in Beard Field House.
Improving its home record to 5-0, Wheaton is now 9-4 overall, while the Seahawks dropped their second consecutive match to fall to 4-8.
Playing the match to decision, the Lyons swept doubles action before winning a pair of singles contests. At second doubles, senior Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, Mass./Home Schooled) and freshman Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) blanked their opponents.
Senior Harry Altman (Riverdale, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshman Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) cruised to an 8-1 victory in the third doubles spot, while senior Brian Krantz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) and junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) collected an 8-5 win at one.
Sharon gave up just one game during a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fourth singles, while Altman notched a decisive 6-0, 6-2 triumph at number five. Oliver and Krantz each won their opening sets in the first and second positions, respectively, while Poulin trailed 6-5 at three.
The Lyons head to New London, Connecticut, on Saturday for their final regular season road match at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
