Oliver tabbed NEWMAC singles player for third time in five weeks
NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College men's tennis junior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) was tabbed New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week for the third time in five weeks, as he was selected for the week ending on Sunday, April 24.
Oliver went 2-0 from the top position, including notching a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 victory over his opponent from nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during Wheaton's 6-3 home loss on Saturday. Tiebreak scores were 7-4 and 7-3. Oliver's counterpart is ranked 10th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). During the Lyons' 5-0 victory over Endicott College on Tuesday in Norton, he won 6-1, 6-2.
A winner in five straight matches and nine of his last 10, Oliver will lead Wheaton into this Saturday's NEWMAC Tournament semifinal round against the United States Coast Guard Academy. Now 11-5 overall while finishing its league slate at 4-1, the second-seeded Lyons will play the third-seeded Bears at MIT at 3:00 p.m. Wheaton notched a 5-4 victory over Coast Guard in New London, Connecticut, two Saturdays ago.
