Lyons compete at Stonehill Invitational

EASTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team opened its 2011 season at the Stonehill Invitational, sending four doubles teams to compete in the event.

The Lyons first doubles team of sophomores Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) and Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) lost a 9-8 (8-6 tiebreaker) match to the Roger Williams University team of senior Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) and sophomore Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Webster). In their second round consolation match, Stonehill dealt Sharon and Terrace an 8-4 loss.

The Lyons No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Nishon Radhakrishnan (Amherst, N.H./Bridgton Academy) and Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) dropped an 8-5 match to Stonehill. Merrimack's pair of junior Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia/Gimnazija Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj) and sophomore Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) then defeated Radhakrishnan and Chan 8-0 in the consolation round.

Wheaton's No. 3 team of junior Kyle Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and sophomore Samuel Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) suffered an 8-4 setback to Springfield's team of sophomore Zac Goldstein (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and freshman Joe Giannelli (Watertown, Conn./Holy Cross). Later, RWU's freshmen team of Zack Bussiere (Colchester, Vt./Bacon Academy) and Alexander Dimas (Athens, N.Y./ACS Athens) upended the pair, 8-5, in the consolation round.

The No. 4 doubles pair of Junior William Beaton (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) and freshman Brendon Pickering (Merrimack, Mass./Waring School) was dealt an 8-6 loss by senior Tim Regan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) and junior Jeff Paadre (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) of The College of Holy Cross. In the consolation round, the Lyons pair defeated a team from Springfield College, 8-6.

The Lyons return to action on Sunday when they host the Wheaton Invitational. Competition begins at 10 a.m. at the Clark Tennis Courts.
