Men’s Tennis Rallies Past Stonehill, 5-4

Lyons win third-straight match

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team rallied from a 4-3 deficit in singles play to claim a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Stonehill College, ranked tenth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Clark Tennis Courts.

Freshmen Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) and David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrok Prep) both rallied from deficits in the final two singles matches of the contest to help the Lyons win their third-straight match.

Feit, trailing 5-2 in the third set at No.1 singles against Stonehill sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic), pushed back for a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 victory. Gassen lost his opening set at No.2 singles versus junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) but rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 decision.

Freshman Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) took down fellow classmate Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) at No.3 singles 6-2, 6-2 and junior Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) earned a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No.4 singles against Stonehill senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien).

The Skyhawks won the remaining matches in singles play as junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) defeated Wheaton senior Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) 6-1, 6-3 at No.5 singles and sophomore Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) ousted junior Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) 6-1, 6-3 at No.6.

Stonehill held a 2-1 advantage in the match after doubles play concluded. The newly minted New England Women's and Men's Athletic (NEWMAC) Conference Doubles Team of the Week, Sharon and Terrace, posted the Lyons only doubles victory at No.2 as the duo defeated Hyzak and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) 9-7.
