Men's Tennis Claims 5-4 Win Versus Oneonta State Red Dragons

Scarpa clinches victory for Wheaton at No.6 singles

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team edged Oneonta State, 5-4, in non-conference action on Friday evening at the Clark Tennis Courts.

Tied 4-4 with No.6 singles left to be decided, senior Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) rallied from a 5-1 deficit in set two for a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Oneonta State freshman Trevor Mitchel (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) to clinch the win.

Scarpa also teamed up with freshman David Gassen (Dusseldorf, German/Saddlebrook Prep) for an 8-5 triumph at No.3 doubles against Mitchel and senior Adam Slifkin (Flushing, N.Y./Nordhoff).

Wheaton freshman Will White (Nantucket, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) defeated fellow classmate Tyler Crill (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No.2 singles.

Junior Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) earned a 6-4, 6-4 decision over junior Benjamin Leighton (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) at No.3 singles and third-year Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) bested Slifkin at No.5 singles by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Wheaton (5-4, 0-2 NEWMAC) travels to Springfield College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Oneonta State (3-10) plays Baruch College tomorrow at noon.
