Three Lyons honored by conference
NORTON, Mass. – Three members of the Wheaton College men's tennis team have received weekly honors from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), it was announced yesterday by the league office.
Junior Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) has been named the NEWMAC Singles Player of the Week while freshman David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) and senior Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) have earned NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week recognition.
Sharon led Wheaton to a 2-1 week overall and 1-1 mark in the NEWMAC with three wins at No.3 singles. Sharon posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Antoine Martin (Clark University) on April 3 to jumpstart his 3-0 week overall. Sharon also defeated Benjamin Leighton (Oneonta State), 6-4, 6-4, and Joe Giannelli (Springfield College), 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.
Sharon collects his second-career NEWMAC Singles Player of the Week award after claiming the same distinction earlier this season on March 25. Sharon is 11-1 overall this season in singles play and 7-5 in doubles play with junior Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley).
Gassen and Scarpa went undefeated at No.3 doubles on the week including an 8-3 win over NEWMAC foe Springfield College on Saturday. Against Oneonta State, Gassen and Scarpa downed Adam Slifkin and Trevor Mitchel by an 8-5 decision.
Wheaton (6-4, 1-2 NEWMAC) travels to St Anselm College, an NCAA Division II program, on Wednesday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m.
