Lyons Appear In Four Out Of Five Finals At Wheaton Invitational

Scott, Smith win consolation round in Flight B Doubles

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team advanced to four out of five championship rounds in both singles and doubles play during Sunday's Wheaton Invitational on the Clark Tennis Courts.

In singles action, sophomore Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) fell to Nichols College junior Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) by a 7-6, 6-2 score in the Flight A championship. Feit advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Clark University sophomore Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor).

Wheaton sophomore Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) claimed a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Clark sophomore Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Balandra-Cruz Del Sur) in the semifinal round of Flight B singles before dropping a hard-fought 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 match to Nichols sophomore Carlos De La Cruz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Florida Virtual School) in the championship round.

In doubles play, Lyons' sophomore David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) and junior Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) defeated Nichols duo Cam Lewis (Bolton, Mass./St. John's) and Maurice Thomas-Riley by an 8-4 score in Flight A. Gassen and Chan lost to Clark teammates Dan Stein (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and Zach Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley), 8-5, in the finals.

Wheaton senior Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) and freshman Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./Berwick Academy) posted an 8-6 win against Nichols duo Paul Healy (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) and Dan Roman (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) before falling to Clark teammates Spencer Brightman (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and Phillip Porter (Cortland Manor, N.Y./The Harvey School) in the Flight B championship round, 8-6.

Lyons' sophomores Tyler Smith (New Canaan, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and Dave Scott (Pomfret Center, Conn./Woodstock Academy) turned in an 8-3 victory in the consolation round of Flight B.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, September 14 at the Connecticut College Tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
