Lyons drop to 3-2 in NEWMAC play

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's tennis team lost to Babson College, 8-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Wednesday evening inside the Beard Field House. The league contest was moved indoors due to unplayable weather conditions.

Junior Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) and sophomore David Gassen (Dusselforf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep) picked up the only win for the Lyons with an 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles.

Wheaton nearly came out of doubles action with a 2-1 lead but sophomore Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) and senior co-captain Ned Terrace (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) were edged in a hard-fought match by a 9-8 (8-6) score.

The Lyons (9-6, 3-2 NEWMAC) host Clark University in a NEWMAC matchup this Saturday at 1 p.m. Babson (8-6, 5-0 NEWMAC) welcomes UMass Boston to its campus tomorrow at 3 p.m. and will host MIT, who is also unbeaten in league play, this coming Saturday at 1 p.m.
