WHEATON (9-8, 3-3 NEWMAC) – Despite entering the NEWMAC Tournament on a three-match losing streak, the Lyons defeated Coast Guard earlier this season by a 6-3 decision on the road. Wheaton's 4-5-6 singles pairings of sophomore David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Saddlebrook Prep), classmate Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif./Stevenson School) and senior Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn./Darien) closed out the win for the Blue and White after leading doubles play with a 3-0 mark.

Other highlights from the season include a four-match winning streak for the Lyons that spanned from March 12-29 beginning with an 8-1 victory over Alfred and concluding with their aforementioned 6-3 triumph against Coast Guard.

Jackson leads the team in singles wins with 11, while Archer is 10-7, sophomore Jonah Feit (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) has seven and senior co-captain Dan Sharon (Santa Monica, Calif./Brentwood School) has registered six wins. In doubles play, junior Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I./Wheeler School) is 11-7 on the season pairing up with Gassen and freshman Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) along the way.

COAST GUARD (5-10, 3-3 NEWMAC) – The Bears are coming off a pair of conference victories against Emerson (9-0) and Clark University (5-4) before this week's tournament action starts up. Coast Guard also has wins against Holy Cross, Johnson & Wales and Springfield College. Robert Renfrow leads the squad with 13 victories in singles play, while Mark Guentert is 10-8 on the year. The Bears best doubles pairing features Geuntert and Weston Fortna. The duo has a 12-7 record and is 8-2 in their last ten matches (all Coast Guard records accurate as of 4/22/14, 7:30 PM).

THE MATCHUP – Prior to this season, Wheaton is 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC Tournament against Coast Guard dating back to the 2009-10 season. The Lyons have met up with the Bears three times total in the conference tournament going 2-1 in those matches. Coast Guard picked up a 5-1 win over Wheaton in their last meeting in 2011.

LOOKING AHEAD – The winner of today's matchup will take on No. 1 seeded MIT, also ranked No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings, on Saturday, April 26 in Cambridge, mass. at 12 p.m. The Engineers captured their 16th consecutive NEWMAC regular season title with a perfect 6-0 record in league play this season.
