Lyons send small contingent to URI, turn in sixth-place performance

KINGSTON, RI- Despite taking a small group of athletes to the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Invitational on Saturday, the Wheaton College men's track & field team took sixth place in Mackal Field House. As one of two Division III teams, the Lyons scored 27.5 points, while the University of Connecticut topped the seven-team field with 226 points.

Sophomore Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) had the top individual performance for the Lyons. Despite normally competing in sprinting events, Robinson was second in the long jump at 22' 3", which was 5 1/2" short of an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standard.

Senior Michael Latner (Torrance, CA/West) tied for fifth in the pole vault while anchoring the fifth-place 4x400-meter relay quartet. Latner was joined on the foursome by junior Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston), sophomore Miles Ketchum (South Lee, MA/Monument Mountain Regional) and freshman Ben Miklovich (New Gloucester, ME/Gray-New Gloucester).

During the 500-meter run, junior Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) was fourth in 1:06.84, while Fahey and Ketchum in fifth and eighth, respectively, were less than a second off of Williamson's pace.

Three additional Lyons finished in the top 10, with freshman Brandon Holmes (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) eighth in the 55-meter dash, sophomore Jason Browne (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) ninth in the 1,000M, and freshman Sam Fear (Bath, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) ninth during the shot put.

The Lyon men and women host the Wheaton Invitational next Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
