FITCHBURG, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's track & field squads combined for 17 top-three event finishes on Saturday at Fitchburg State College, as the Lyon men took second among 14 scoring teams with 112 points at the Sheehan Memorial, while the women were fourth out of 16 squads with 87 points. Bates College won the men's meet with 187 points and the women's competition with 146.5.
Sophomore Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) played a role in three victories and a pair of NCAA Championship provisional cuts, doing both while breaking a year-old school record in the 200-meter dash at 21.59. Robinson helped the 4x100M relay quartet to victory in an NCAA time of 41.12, which was 0.12 seconds shy of an automatic standard and within 0.17 ticks of the school record, as he joined seniors Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) and Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) and junior Raiyan Banaji (Mumbai, India/American School of Bombay). Robinson also won the 100M, while Ibric turned in a provisional time of 21.62 in the 200-meter dash, taking second to Robinson while also eclipsing the former school mark of 21.63. Ibric notched another runner-up showing in the 100M.
Wheaton's second 4x100M relay foursome nearly also notched an NCAA showing, placing second while coming within 0.46 seconds of a provisional time. Junior Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) and freshmen David Christensen (Springfield, MA/Commerce), Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) and Ben Miklovich (Gloucester, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) ran legs.
In the 400M, Williamson won and was followed by Jeffrey in second and Miklovich in fourth. Sophomore Sheldon Allen (Dorchester, MA/Charlestown) won the 110M hurdles, while Banaji was third in the 100M and 10th in the 200M. Rounding out Wheaton's contingent of six runners among the 200M's top 10 were Williamson in sixth, Miklovich in seventh and Jeffrey taking ninth.
Freshman Cameron Souza (Norton, MA/Saint Sebastian's School) was second in the high jump, while classmates Sam Fear (Bath, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) and Brandon Holmes (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) took fourth in the javelin and seventh in the 110M hurdles, respectively. Junior Nick Kacher (Waltham, MA/Waltham) placed eighth in the 5,000M, while classmate Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston) was 10th in the 1,500M. Fear and Souza joined senior Michael Latner (Torrance, CA/West) and sophomore Miles Ketchum (South Lee, MA/Monument Mountain Regional) for eighth in the 4x400M relay.
Sophomore Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) won a pair of races on the women's side, besting the 100M and 200M fields. In the 200, her time of 25.44 was 0.19 ticks short of an NCAA standard. Jusme also took second in the 100M hurdles. Her twin sister, sophomore Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical), was second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the 100M.
Freshman Samantha Bennett (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) took second in the 800 and fifth in the 1,500, sophomore Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, RI/La Salle Academy) was fourth in the 200 and eighth in the 100, while classmate Ashley Dell'Aira (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) placed fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. Freshman Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke) came in fourth in the long jump.
Sophomore Savannah Geasey (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) finished fourth in the 3,000M steeplechase, junior Caleigh Greenwell (Warwick, RI/La Salle Academy) was fifth in the hammer throw, and classmate Meagan Jennett (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) took 10th in the 400M hurdles. During the 4x400-meter relay, Claflin, Dell'Aira, Mickey Jusme and freshman Antoinette Woolner (Hillsboro, NH/Hillsboro-Deering) combined for a fifth-place showing.
Wheaton's squads are back in action on Saturday at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell for the Davis Invitational.
