PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Wheaton College men's track & field team's 4x100-meter relay quartet finished 18th out of 87 squads during the 116th Penn Relays on Friday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field, as the Lyons were the top Division III team.
Seniors Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) and Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy), junior Raiyan Banaji (Mumbai, India/American School of Bombay) and sophomore Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) combined for a time of 41.28, which provisionally qualified them for the NCAA Championship.
During their nine-team heat, the Lyons took third, beating out such squads as Division I University of Texas. Wheaton was just 0.17 ticks behind Saint Augustine's College of North Carolina, which was second in the heat and won last year's NCAA Division II Championship, while reigning Division I national champ Texas A&M University captured the heat.
The Lyons' performance qualified them for one of Saturday's three finals races, which they will forgo in order to compete at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship. The competition begins at Springfield College at 11:00 a.m.
