NORTON, Mass. - This Homecoming Saturday the Wheaton College Department of Athletics will recognize the 2010 men's track & field team during halftime of the men's soccer game against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Keefe Field, which is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The department will pay tribute to the team tying for fifth place nationally at last May's outdoor NCAA Championship, which marked the Lyons' highest finish since 2002, and tying for ninth at the indoor national meet.
The ceremony will be facilitated by Executive Director of Athletics Chad Yowell and Associate Director of Athletics John Sutyak '00. Invited guests will be encouraged to join other former student-athletes, alums, families and additional Lyon supporters under the Homecoming Welcome Tent, sponsored by the Lyons Athletic Club (LAC) and Wheaton Alumnae/i Association.
Saturday's festivities are also set to have audio and video coverage from Norton Community Television and student-run campus radio station WCCS-FM 96.5. The broadcast will be on a tape-delay basis and will be available free of charge on Wheaton's athletics website at athletics.wheatoncollege.edu.
During the 2010 outdoor NCAA Championship under co-head coaches Marc Mangiacotti and Paul Souza, the Wheaton men accomplished what no other Lyon track & field team had ever achieved at a national championship, capturing national titles in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
Scoring 26 points, the outdoor team needed the meet's final event, the 4x400M relay, to move into a tie for fifth place. Wheaton was a single point shy of fourth and two points short of third. Only the 2002 outdoor squad had a higher finish in program history, standing alone in fifth. Also needing the 4x400M relay, the indoor team's 15 points were three shy of fifth place.
