MEDFORD, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's track & field teams each finished in the upper half of their respective team standings during Saturday's Tufts University Invitational at the Gantcher Family Sports & Convocation Center.
The women placed third out of 10 teams with 88 points, while the men took fourth among eight with 74. The hosts won the women's title, and Division II University of Massachusetts at Lowell claimed the men's championship.
The women turned in three event wins and one NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standard, as junior Didine Jusme (Providence, R.I./Classical) took third in the 60-meter hurdles with a provisional time of 8.95. Freshman Ashante Little (Seabrook, N.H./Winnacunnet) placed fifth.
Juniors Ashley Dell'Aira (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Tope Waheed (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) captured top honors in the triple jump and weight throw, respectively. Jusme and Little joined junior Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) and freshman Charmine Bien-Aime (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) on the victorious 4x400M relay team.
A quartet of third-place finishes came from Bien-Aime in the 60M dash, as her time of 8.11 was 0.01 ticks shy of the leader, Dell'Aira in the long jump, sophomore Sylvia Okoye (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) in the weight throw and freshman Valerie Knapp (New Britain, Conn./Plainville) in the 400M dash.
Freshman Meredith Scannell (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) came in fourth during the 600M run, while senior Meagan Jennett (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), sophomore Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) and freshman Mollie Lane (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) took fifth in the 400M dash, long jump and high jump, respectively.
For the men, senior Colin Fahey (Waltham, Mass./Weston) won the 800-meter run, as did the 4x400M relay team, which consisted of senior Mark Williamson (Vienna, Va./James Madison), junior Miles Ketchum (South Lee, Mass./Monument Mountain Regional) and sophomores Howard Manly (Ayer, Mass./Lawrence Academy) and Ben Miklovich (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester).
Freshman Michael Read (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) was the runner up in the 60M dash final after leading the pack during the preliminary race. Wheaton's 4x800M relay team comprised of Fahey, junior Ezra Citron (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham), sophomore Michael Richard (Chicopee, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) and freshman Nick Emard (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) also placed second.
Third-place finishes came from Read in the 200M dash, Williamson in the 400M dash and freshman John Wisener (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) in the pole vault. Sophomore Brandon Holmes (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), who took third during the 60M hurdles preliminary, placed fourth in the final.
Wheaton competes next Saturday at the Springfield College Invitational beginning at 12:00 p.m.
