Wheaton teams put forward solid showing at Tufts in outdoor opener
MEDFORD, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's and women's track & field teams began their outdoor season at the Snowflake Classic hosted by Tufts University at the Dussault Complex on Saturday.
The women's team earned 79 points to finish fifth out of 15 teams, while the men placed ninth with 30 points. Both Tufts teams captured the overall titles.
In the running events, junior Didine Jusme (Providence, R.I./Classical) placed first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 12.89 and 26.81, respectively. Also in the 200M event, junior Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) and senior Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, R.I./ Hope) took second and fourth, respectively, as Smith returned to the track after recovering from an injury suffered her junior year.
Freshman Ashante Little (Seabrook, N.H./Winnacunnet) battled through the finish of the 400M hurdles before finishing third. Cardarelli turned in a fifth-place result in the 400M dash.
In the field, sophomore Amanda Claflin (Pembroke, Mass./ Pembroke) was the runner up during the long jump, while sophomores Sylvia Okoye (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) and Naomi Hodges (Wethersfield, Conn./ Wethersfield) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the discus throw.
During the hammer throw, junior Tope Waheed (East Providence, R.I./East Providence) and freshman Claire Sampson (Middletown, R.I./Prout School) occupied the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
For the men, freshman Michael Read (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) recorded a third-place time in the 200-meter dash while taking fourth in the 100M race. His 100M prelims time of 10.84 was 0.04 ticks shy of a national meet provisional qualifying mark. Classmate Ben Dibble (Salem, Mass./ Salem) secured a third-place finish in the 110M hurdles, as did senior Nick Kacher (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) during the 5000M run.
Sophomore Howard Manly (Ayer, Mass./Lawrence Academy) took sixth in the 800M run, junior Miles Ketchum (South Lee, Mass./Monument Mountain Regional) placed seventh during the 400M dash and senior Colin Fahey (Waltham, Mass./Weston) and sophomore Sam Fear (Bath, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) came in eighth in the 1,500M run and shot put, respectively.
Next Saturday, the Lyons will travel to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell to compete at the Davis Invitational.
