Wheaton opens campaign at Amherst Invitational
AMHERST, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2009 season at the Amherst College Invitational on Saturday, where the men took second and the women placed third. While competing head-to-head with the hosts, the men totaled 50 points to the Lord Jeffs' 15, and the women tallied 79 points in a three-team field. Amherst won the women's meet with 23 points, while Springfield College was close behind with 38.
After each of the top nine men's finishers were Amherst athletes, Wheaton junior captain Nick Kacher (Waltham, MA/Waltham) took 10th in a time of 17:22. Classmate Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston) came in 12th at 17:36, and freshman Michael Richard (Chicopee, MA) was 17th in his first college race.
The top female finisher for the Lyons was senior captain Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield), who was competing for the first time since 2007 after studying abroad last fall. Pratt was 18th, clocking in at 21:36.
Wheaton's next four finishers took 26th through 29th while coming within 29 seconds of one another. The quartet included sophomores Monica Black (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown), Kimberly Nash (Tempe, AZ/McClintock) and Rachel Scavera (North Bend, OR/North Bend) and freshman Lindsay Petrenchik (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls).
Both Lyon teams return to action next Saturday for the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Invitational.
