AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Nick Kacher (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) kicked the 2010 season off in style for the Wheaton College men's cross country team, taking first place by 27 seconds during Saturday's Amherst College Invitational. The men placed second as a team with 37 points, while the women took fourth with 117 points. The hosts won both team competitions.
Kacher covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:33, besting 20 runners, while senior Colin Fahey (Waltham, Mass./Weston) came in fourth. Amherst runners comprised the next 11 spots and were followed by Wheaton sophomores Karl Mader (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) and Michael Richard (Chicopee, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) and freshman Nick Emard (Griswold, Conn./Griswold), who were separated by 14 seconds.
On the women's side, the Lord Jeffs had the race's top seven runners among the four teams. Junior Savannah Geasey (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) was Wheaton's top runner, finishing the 5,000-meter run in 26th place. Classmates Rachel Scavera (North Bend, Ore./North Bend) and Taylor Wills (Kinderhook, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) were three ticks apart in taking 29th and 32nd, respectively.
The Wheaton teams next head to the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth one week from today to compete in the Corsairs' annual invitational.
