Lyons extend winning streak to eight, down undefeated Brockport

FORT MYERS, FL- Sophomore hurler Lesley Warn (Portland, ME/Deering) yielded no earned runs and four hits during 12 innings of work on Wednesday, tossing a pair of complete games to help the Wheaton College softball team down Macalester College, 14-0 in five innings and the undefeated College at Brockport, 2-1 during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Lee County Sports Complex. At 9-1, the Lyons have won eight straight, one short of matching the ninth-longest stretch in program history.

Warn allowed only one hit against Minnesota-based Macalester, striking out five with one walk during five frames. Sophomore Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, MA/North Reading) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two steals, a triple and a walk, while junior Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) was 2-for-3 with two runs while being hit once by a pitch.

Freshman Brittany Calarese (Norwood, MA/Norwood) added two RBI, classmate Megan Roy (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) scored three runs, and juniors Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) and Katy Salka (Ayer, MA/Ayer) were plated twice apiece. Freshman Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, MA/Southfield School) picked up her first collegiate hit for the Lyons.

Sophomore Amanda Knopf (Boulder, CO/Boulder) suffered the loss for the Scots despite striking out eight and walking two, as 13 unearned runs came across. The Lyons took advantage of seven errors, four wild pitches, two hit batsmen and a pair of passed balls.

After scoring three runs without a hit in the second inning, Wheaton tacked on two more in the fourth, including Hunt swiping home as part of a double steal. In the fifth, the Lyons sealed the victory with nine runs on eight hits and three errors. After Wheaton picked up three hits during the first 4.2 innings of the contest, seven consecutive batters had hits following a two-out error in the fifth. Calarese had a two-run single in the frame, Poplaski legged out a two-run triple, and DeRosa added two hits.

Warn allowed one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks against Brockport, while DeRosa was 2-for-2. Junior Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) took the loss after fanning seven with one walk and allowing four hits.

The Golden Eagles mustered only a pair of opposite-field flare singles over the first 6.1 innings. Wheaton worked around a walk and two errors in the sixth inning to keep the game scoreless heading into the bottom half of the frame.

Poplaski led off the sixth with a single before coming around on Salka's one-out base knock, and DeRosa later followed with an RBI single through the left side that made it 2-0. The Lyons would end up needing both runs, as a single and two more errors in the seventh led to a Brockport run, and the tying run stood on second base with one out before Warn induced a popup and a grounder to end the game.

The Lyons finish off their season-opening run of 12 games in six days tomorrow against Fitchburg State College at 9:00 a.m. and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey at 11:00 a.m.
