NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team rallied for three runs in the eighth to defeat Babson College 7-6 and earn a split of its doubleheader with the Beavers Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Friday afternoon at Clark Field.
After dropping the opener of their doubleheader 2-1, the Lyons found themselves trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth in game two. Senior Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) began the inning on second and scored on an illegal pitch to cut Wheaton's deficit to one. Senior Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) scored the tying run on a fielders choice play on a ball hit by junior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School). Sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) followed with a bunt that plated sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) to win the game.
Junior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) drove in two runs earlier in the game for the Lyons (9-11, 3-1 NEWMAC) while Brillon finished the contest with two hits. Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) picked up the win in relief of freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South), who tossed the first seven innings. Baker allowed three hits and two runs in the eighth after Christmas surrendered eight hits and four runs with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Junior Catie Funk (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI for the Beavers (10-10, 1-3 NEWMAC), who outhit the Lyons 11-9. Junior Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) pitched the first 6.1 innings for Babson and allowed six hits and five runs (three earned) with three walks and one strikeout. Freshman Meghan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) took the loss, allowing three hits and two runs in the eighth.
In the opener, Babson built a 2-0 lead behind a solo home run from senior Kayla Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) in the third and an RBI double by senior Nicole Latini (East Bridgewater, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) in the fourth. Wheaton got one back in the fifth when Poplaski led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single to right by Christmas.
Sophomore Tess Rubega (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) tossed a complete game, eight-hitter for Babson to earn the win. She walked two and struck out four. Baker was pinned with the loss as she allowed five hits and two runs with six strikeouts. Both Poplaski and freshman Aimee Avila (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) recorded two this for the Lyons. Latini finished 2-for-3.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Smith. Game one begins at noon.
