Lyons split NEWMAC doubleheader with MIT

NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) and freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) each drove in runs in Wheaton College's 3-0 win over MIT in game two of its doubleheader in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Friday afternoon at Clark Field.

Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) tossed a complete game, eight-hitter to earn her ninth win of the season for the Lyons (13-13, 6-2 NEWMAC), who saw their 41-game winning streak against the Engineers halted with a 4-2 loss in game one. MIT (4-13, 2-2 NEWMAC) went nearly 20 years without a win against Wheaton, having last won back on April 23, 1994. On that date, the Engineers edged the Lyons in Cambridge, 4-3.

Game two was scoreless through three innings before Christmas led off the fourth with her second home run of the season. Senior Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) singled leading off the fifth and scored on a single by Rocha to double the Lyons lead, and junior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) scored an unearned run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Freshman Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts to fall to 2-6 for MIT. Freshman Kelly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) went 2-for-3.

Poplaski singled leading off the third in game one and scored on a wild pitch to stake Wheaton to a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Rocha drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a pair of throwing errors by the Engineers to make it 2-0.

MIT cut its deficit in half in the fifth on a solo blast by freshman Kelly Wang (La Canada, Calif./Flintridge Prep) down the left field line. The Engineers then touched up freshman reliever Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) for three runs in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Senior Katie Harrington (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar) tied the game at two with an RBI single that brought in Wang. An RBI single off the bat of senior Jessica Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./The Shipley School) put MIT ahead 3-2, and an RBI grounder from junior Leah Alpert (Needham, Mass./Needham) pushed the lead to 4-2.

In the ninth, Rocha reached on a fielding error and worked her way to third with two down before sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) grounded to first to end the game.

Baker worked the first five innings for the Lyons and surrendered a pair of hits and one run while striking out six. Berardi suffered the loss, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks. Iacobucci earned the win for MIT as she scattered seven hits and allowed two runs with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Junior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) went 3-for-3 for Wheaton.

The Lyons host their annual 'Cans for Cancer' event Saturday afternoon when Clark visits Norton for a doubleheader beginning at noon. MIT hosts a DH against Springfield tomorrow at noon.
