Softball Takes One Of Two From Roger Williams

Roy, Welch drive in a combined six runs in nightcap

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team took one of two games from Roger Williams University in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Clark Field by scores of 3-2 and 11-5 (six innings).

Freshman Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) picked up the win for the Hawks pitching seven innings, yielding ten hits, two runs (one earned), four walks and four strikeouts.

Wheaton junior Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) was handed the no-decision on five innings pitched, six hits, two runs (both unearned), one free pass and four strikeouts. Sophomore Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) took the loss in relief allowing one run (unearned) over two innings of work, three hits, no walks and one punchout.

Junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) lifted the Lyons to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to center field, her second this season.

Roger Williams evened the score in the top of the third inning as freshman Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn./Trumball) notched a run-producing single down the left field line. Wheaton answered in the bottom half as freshmen Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) and Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) pulled off a successful double steal. Hart swiped home while Timoteo took second base.

The Hawks scored their second run of the contest in the fifth on a throwing error and sophomore Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass./Milford) plated the game-winning run in the sixth with an RBI single to right field driving home classmate Stefany McCarthy (Walpole, Mass./Norfolk County Agriculture). Maliga escaped a bases loaded two out jam in the next half inning with a strikeout to keep the Lyons offense at bay.

Wheaton 11, Roger Williams 5 (six innings)

Sophomore Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) did not surrender an earned run in six innings pitched while allowing nine hits, one walk and striking out four batters.

Roger Williams' freshman Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits and one walk in one-third of an inning for the loss.

The Lyons offense erupted in the bottom of the first inning scoring five runs on six hits, no errors and three runners left on base. Senior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) plated two runs with a double to right-center, Timoteo followed with an RBI double to the same location and freshman Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill./Fenton) smacked a two-run homer to center to round out the scoring.

In the third, junior Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle and Roy had an RBI single through the right side of the infield to give Wheaton an 8-0 lead. The Lyons also scored two runs in the fourth as Rocha connected for a run-producing triple to right field and junior Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) knocked her home with a single to right.

The Hawks responded with five runs on five hits, one error and one runner left on base in the fifth to cut into the deficit at 10-5. Wheaton tacked on another run in the bottom half on an RBI single from Welch. After Roger Williams batted in the sixth and did not tie the score, the game was called due to darkness.

Wheaton (21-13) hosts Wellesley College on Friday, April 19 for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with game one scheduled for 3 p.m. Roger Williams (15-15) travels to Johnson & Wales on Thursday, April 18 for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
