NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team dropped their home opener double-header against the Williams College Ephs 6-4 and 5-2 on Tuesday at Clark Field.
The Lyons fall to 7-7 (1-1 NEWMAC) on the season while the Ephs advance to 10-3 overall.
GAME ONE - Williams 6, Wheaton 4
Wheaton got on the board first during the first inning when senior Emma Hart jumped on base with a single that allowed senior Marissa Timoteo to knock her in when she singled to right center field.
Williams responded with a run of their own in the top of the second off a double to left field. It wouldn't be until the third where the Lyons would explode offensively with back-to-back home runs from senior Kelly Welch and junior Emily Bouthillette to clutch 4-1 advantage.
The Ephs tied it up in the top of the sixth when they tallied two doubles and a single to make it 4-4 and secured the 6-4 win when they notched a tw0-run homer at the top of the seventh.
Junior pitcher Danielle Cimino (3-3) collected four strikeouts.
GAME TWO - Williams 5, Wheaton 2
Williams opened scoring immediately in the first when they utilized a double down the left field line to score in a run. The Ephs extended the lead in the third with a single up the middle to make it 2-0. Wheaton tallied one run in the bottom half when junior Mary DeMoura singled to left field to knock in senior Madeline Hatch.
The Ephs pushed through additional runs in the sixth, including the game-winning one to get 4-1 advantage. The Lyons could only get one more run across the plate in the sixth with a sac fly from junior Katelyn Andrade to right field.
Pitcher first-year Shelbi Wilson registered four strikeouts in her four innings pitched.
The Lyons travel to Emerson College for a NEWMAC double-header on Friday with game times slated for 3 and 5 p.m.
