NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College softball team defeated the Emerson College Lions, 9-0, in game one of the double-header in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Clark Softball Field. The Lyons then went onto defeat the visitors 12-8 in game two.
GAME ONE: Wheaton 9 - Emerson 0
A nine-run third inning boosted Wheaton in game one as the Lyons shut down Emerson. Senior Rebecca Seifert was the first Lyon on base in the third, reaching on a walk and giving senior Jessica Cochrane the opportunity to bring her home after she slammed a double to to left center. Sophomore Emily Schlapak held on to the momentum as she crushed her eighth home run of the season to bring her and Cochrane around the bases, pushing Wheaton ahead, 3-0.
Senior Caroline Fairbanks and senior Morgan Walsh earned walks as junior Alexis Havrilla loaded the bases with a single to center field, to jump start the action again for the Lyons. Sophomore Chloe Woodward would then smack a single up the middle to bring in Fairbanks to make it 4-0.
Senior Mary DeMoura would go on to register two more runs for Wheaton when she hit a double down the left field line as Seifert returned to the plate, hitting a single on the right side herself to bring home Wodward and DeMoura. Cochrane tallied the final run for Wheaton with a single up the middle for an RBI, giving Wheaton the 9-0 advantage.
Senior Danielle Cimino (7-3) continued her hot streak and earned her seventh straight win while collecting six strikeouts, only giving up three hits and shutting down the Lions.
GAME TWO: Wheaton 12 - Emerson 8
Cimino picked up her second win of the day after coming in to pitch in the fourth inning with the game tied 6-6. Cimino completed 3.2 innings, giving up just two runs on three hits, while striking out one.
Wheaton took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run to right center from Schlapak. The home run is ninth of the season for the sophomore.
The Lyons tacked on three more in the second, starting with DeMoura coming in to score on a field error by the Lions. Alexis Havrilla knocked in the final two runs of the inning with a single to center that scored Walsh and Schlapak.
Emerson earned four runs back in the third starting with three RBI singles. The final run came around after Shelby Carney stole home. Kallista Leonardos tied the game in the fourth with a two-run home run to right.
Fairbanks earned the lead back for Wheaton in the bottom half of the inning with a double to left center that scored Jessica Cochrane. An RBI sinlge from Seifert and RBI double to left center scored two more runs for the Lyons in the fifth.
Leonardos hit another home run for Emerson in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-7. Wheaton once again countered in their half of the inning, knocking in three more runs.
Carney came around to score the final run of the game on an RBI ground out by Caroline Fortuna in the top of the seventh.
The Lyons travel to Wellesley College on Friday with another NEWMAC double-header with game one kicking off at 3 p.m.
