Softball Defeats BSU in Game One; Fall in Game Two to Split Series

GAME ONE: Wheaton 13 - Bridgewater State 4 (5 innings)

RECORDS: Wheaton (9-18, 4-10 NEWMAC) - BSU (10-15)

LOCATION: Bridgewater, Mass. (Alumni Park)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Allison Cox finished with her eighth complete game of the season and third straight win, allowing four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks. 
  • Jade Assad finished 3-for-4 with a two runs scored and five RBIs. Lily Ongkiko ended the game 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. 
  • It took Wheaton just two innings to put up 11 of its 13 runs, ending the contest after just five innings of play. 
  • The scoring got started in the top of the first with a three-run home run from Assad. The home run brought in Ongkiko and Hannah Arkin, who led off the game with a double and a walk respectively.    
  • The Lyons then took advantage of four Bridgewater State errors in the second inning, scoring eight unearned runs for an 11-0 lead. Wheaton received RBI singles from Arkin, Jessica Nardozza and Emily Schlapak, while Allicyn Cole and Ongkiko both reached on bases loaded walks. 
  • A grand slam from Alexandra Ruprecht in the fourth inning put the Bears on the board, cutting the deficit to 13-4.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 6 - Bridgewater State 7

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Arkin ended game two with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, finishing with a run and an RBI, while Nardozza, Whittles, and Ongkiko went 2-for-4. 
  • Shelbi Wilson collected the loss for the Lyons, giving up seven runs on 11 hits in four-plus innings. Assad came in to close out the contest. 
  • Nardozza gave the Lyons the lead in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single that scored Ongkiko. 
  • Bridgewater countered in the bottom half of the inning for its first lead of the day, pushing two runs across the plate with an RBI ground out and RBI single up the middle. 
  • The Lyons tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the second on an RBI single from Arkin. 
  • The Bears broke the deadlock in the fourth with a home run from Shannon Grindle. BSU also added another run with an RBI single from Ruprecht. Another RBI single to center made it a 5-2 contest. 
  • Wheaton pulled within a run in the fifth with RBI singles from Assad and Whittles. 
  • Bridgewater answered with a pair of runs in the fifth to once again take a three run lead. 
  • Assad singled with two-outs in the top of the seventh before coming around to score on a double by Nardozza. Whittles followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-6, but that would be as close as the Lyons would get.
