NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's basketball senior Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, January 3.
Bailey drew her initial league award after earning MVP honors while leading the Lyons to a 2-0 mark and the Wheaton New Year's Tournament title this past weekend. The point guard averaged 13.0 points, 7.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 50.0 percent (8-16) from the floor, including 60.0 percent (6-10) from three-point range.
In a 65-50 win against Elms College during the first round on Saturday, Bailey turned in 11 points, six assists and five rebounds while canning a trio of threes. During the title game, a 68-58 victory against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday, Bailey had 15 points, nine helpers and seven boards while hitting three threes and going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
The co-captain is second in program history with 403 career assists, all but 51 of which have come since her sophomore year, and 10th with 73 three-pointers. Bailey is 27 helpers short of matching Sharon Morrisseau's '89 21-year-old school record.
Thanks to a four-game winning streak, the Lyons are above .500 at 6-5, including 3-1 in the NEWMAC, and continue a five-contest homestand by facing league foe Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
