Wheaton's 1,000-point club expands as Champney is latest to hit milestone

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's basketball 1,000-point club added another member over the weekend, as senior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) became the 11th player in program history to hit the milestone.  She surpassed the plateau while recording 20 points during Saturday's 65-50 win over Elms College in the first round of the Wheaton New Year's Tournament.

A first-year captain, Champney knocked down a mid-range jumper 3:32 into play on Saturday that gave the Lyons an 11-0 lead over the Blazers.  She finished the game shooting 9-of-16 from the field while pulling down four rebounds.  Champney became the third Wheaton player in as many seasons to hurdle the 1,000-point barrier, joining former teammates Krystin Hickey '09 and Bri Smith '09.

Moving into 10th place on Wheaton's all-time scoring list, Champney has 1,036 points after pouring in 40 and being named to the all-tournament team over the weekend.  In addition to being the program's career leader in blocks with 125, Champney ranks eighth in free throws (209) and 10th in field goals (408).  Through 98 career games, she is averaging 10.6 points.

Champney currently leads this year's 6-5 squad in scoring (13.4), rebounding (6.5), steals (18) and blocks (10).  Her scoring average is a career best and greater than the 12.3 she turned in per game as a sophomore during a season in which Wheaton qualified for the NCAA Tournament and won both the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament titles.

During her four years, Champney has helped the Lyons go 64-34 overall and 33-10 in league play.  The Lyons advanced to the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament each of the last three seasons, including reaching the championship game the past two years.  At the conclusion of Champney's freshman season, the Blue and White was a 2007 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament finalist.
