NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's basketball senior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) became the 23rd player selected for this Saturday's New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Classic at Western New England College in Springfield at 1:00 p.m.
Champney joins classmate and fellow co-captain Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) in the game, but the pair will play on opposite teams.
Playing an integral part in helping lead Wheaton to a 16-11 record and a fourth straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal appearance, Champney became the 11th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. She paced the Lyons in scoring (13.0), rebounding (5.9), field goal shooting (.439) and blocks (33), as her blocks total ranks seventh best in the program's annals. Champney also was second in free throw percentage (.705) and third in steals (23).
Champney led the team in scoring 11 times and at least tied for the lead in rebounding on 12 occasions. She reached double figures in 21 games - averaging over 14 points during a season-ending nine-game streak - while grabbing seven or more rebounds 10 times.
For her career, Champney tied with Bailey for the school record in games played (114) while finishing first in blocks (148), fifth in points (1,240) and field goals (490), sixth in free throws (247), and seventh in rebounds (660) and free throw shooting (.718).
