Bailey's game-winning shot named Buzzer Beater of the Year

NORTON, MA- Thanks to canning a 40-foot desperation heave as the final horn sounded on January 9 against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), senior Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) has earned's women's Buzzer Beater of the Year, besting a field of five finalists from around the nation.

With the Lyons down 63-61 in overtime, sophomore Gabbie DePalo (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) fired an overhand pass from the baseline beyond midcourt, where Bailey caught the ball with 1.5 seconds remaining and her back to the basket, turned to her left and shot with a defender in her face. By burying the bank shot, Bailey gave Wheaton a stunning 64-63 victory.

The full video and each of the other four finalists can be viewed at Bailey's heave beat out runner-up Carthage College of Wisconsin, Washington College of Maryland (3rd), California's University of Redlands (4th) and Christopher Newport University of Virginia (5th). A New England school was also represented on the men's side, with Albertus Magnus College the winner.

Wheaton's starting point guard the past three seasons, Bailey was a co-captain this winter before earning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league first-team honors and being selected to compete in the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Classic.

Bailey finished second in Division III in both assists (168) and helpers per game (6.2), setting a program mark in both single-season and career (500) assists. By also turning in 9.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, Bailey was one of only two players in all of NCAA Division I, II and III women's basketball to average at least 9.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.5 rebounds.
