NORTON, MA – The Wheaton College women's basketball team held a clinic for local youth this past Sunday, September 11, at Emerson Gymnasium inside the Haas Athletic Center.
Student-athletes and coaches from the Lyons women's basketball program worked with grades 3-5 from 6-7 p.m. and grades 6-8 from 7-8 p.m. The clinic was one of several activities held on Wheaton's campus to honor the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
"I am so glad our program could do something to remember 9/11," said Lyons head women's basketball coach Melissa Hodgdon. "Our student-athletes really understand how fortunate they are to be at an amazing academic institution like Wheaton College and were happy to give back."
The event attracted approx. 50 local youths. "It was wonderful," said one parent. "The skills the girls were taught were excellent and will be very helpful during their season. The girls look up to them as role models. What's better than to see them volunteering? It's a great message for our youth."
The 2011-12 Lyons women's basketball season begins on November 15 when they host Roger Williams at 7:30 p.m.
