NEWTON, Mass. - Senior Gabbie DePalo (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in Wheaton College's 64-55 loss to Mount Ida College in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Mount Ida College Athletic Center.
Freshman Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) added nine points and seven boards for the Lyons (1-3), who also received 11 points from junior Jeana Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) and a career-high nine points from freshman Kenzie Kuhn (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs).
Sophomore Abbie Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) scored a game-high 23 points for the Mustangs (2-3), who shot 49 percent from the field (24-of-49), knocked down six of their 13 three-point attempts (46.2 percent), and sank 10 of their 11 free throw attempts (90.9 percent). Senior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) dropped in 12 points and senior Shannon Wood (Gorham, Maine/Catherine McAuley) added 11 points for Mount Ida.
Mount Ida shot 64 percent from the field in the first half and carried a 14-point lead into halftime (38-24). Fedigan paced the Mustangs with 11 points while Rivera notched 10 points. DePalo netted 10 of her 14 points in the opening stanza for the Lyons, who outrebounded Mount Ida 17-12 but made 11 of their 32 attempts from the field (34.4 percent). Wheaton senior Nicole Cullinane (Rindge, N.H./New Hampton School) gave the Lyons a 15-14 lead at 12:13 of the first half with a jumper off a pass from Kuhn, but the Mustangs closed the half on a 24-9 run to lead by double-digits after 20 minutes.
The Mustangs stretched their lead to 16 (49-33) in the second half following a triple from Fedigan with 11:42 to go. A bucket by DePalo with nine minutes remaining cut the Wheaton deficit to 10 (52-42), but the Mustangs answered with a 10-4 run to regain a 14-point lead with three minutes remaining. Fedigan scored five points during the run. The Lyons climbed to within nine points with 1:19 to go following a three by Trimboli and a pair of free throws by Brickley before Mount Ida went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal with win.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at 7 p.m. The Mustangs travel to Becker for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
