Lyons defeated by Elizabethtown in Puerto Rico, 58-49
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Freshman Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) scored 15 points and snared nine rebounds in Wheaton College's 58-49 loss to Elizabethtown College in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday morning in the first of two games in Puerto Rico this week.
Senior Gabbie DePalo (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) added nine points and eight boards for the Lyons, who slipped to 2-7 on the season. Sophomore Kendra Beittel (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) paced the Blue Jays (8-3) with 14 points.
The Lyons trailed by two at the break (31-29) and were led by Brickley with nine points. Senior Nicole Cullinane (Rindge, N.H./New Hampton School) added six points and a pair of helpers in the opening stanza while junior Jeana Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) notched three points, three assists and two rebounds. Sophomore Taylor Kreider (Willow Street, Pa./Solanco) scored a team-high eight points for Elizabethtown.
Wheaton tied the score at 38 with just over 11 minutes to play before the Blue Jays closed the game on a 20-11 run. Cullinane finished with eight points and four assists while sophomore Lauren McClelland (Scituate, Mass./Notre Dame) added eight points and two boards. Classmate Sarah Fitzgerald (Bath, Maine/Morse) finished with five points and five rebounds.
For the Blue Jays, Kreider finished with 10 points and nine rebounds while freshman Cheyenne Stonerook (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown) chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
The Lyons shot 32.8 percent from the field (19-of-58) – including just 3-of-22 from behind the arc – and knocked down 8-of-15 from the charity stripe (53.3 pct.). The Blue Jays struggled as well, hitting on 19-of-57 (33.3 pct.) from the field. The game was decided at the free throw line as Elizabethtown had nine more attempts that Wheaton, draining eight of them (16-of-24 overall).
Wheaton wraps up play down south Wednesday morning with an 11 a.m. contest with University of the Sacred Heart. Elizabethtown hosts York (Pa.) on January 5 at 7 p.m.
