SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Sophomore Melissa McLaughlin (Spindale, N.C./R-S Central) poured in a game-high 17 points and freshman Kenzie Kuhn (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs) added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in Wheaton College's 71-44 win over the University of the Sacred Heart (Puerto Rico) in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday morning.
Junior Gabby Barbera (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added 10 points and eight boards for the Lyons (3-7), who shot a season-high 40.9 percent from the field (27-of-66) while outrebounding Sacred Heart 49-34.
The Lyons built an eight-point halftime lead (33-25) behind 11 points from McLaughlin, seven from sophomore Lauren McClelland (Scituate, Mass./Notre Dame), and three points and seven rebounds from senior Gabbie DePalo (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional). Defensively, Wheaton held Sacred Heart to 33.3 percent shooting (9-of-27) and dominated the glass, outrebounding their counterpart 28-16 through the first 20 minutes.
Wheaton ran away with the game in the second half, outscoring Sacred Heart 38-19 to post its largest margin of victory (27 points) since defeating MIT by 33 points (57-24) on February 19, 2009. McLaughlin finished with three 3-point field goals, McClelland snared a game-high 11 rebounds, and sophomore Sarah Fitzgerald (Bath, Maine/Morse) chipped in with a career-high nine points and six rebounds.
Loraine Morales led the University of the Sacred Heart with 16 points and nine rebounds. Andrea Ramos registered 14 points while Carla Hernandez added 10 points.
The Lyons return to action on Thursday, January 5 with a 5:30 p.m. contest at Springfield.
