LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 16-10 setback at the hands of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo on Monday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Lyons kicked off a stretch of three games in four days by facing a team that was also opening its season.
Sophomore Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord) paced Wheaton with four goals and three assists, while classmate Brittany Whynot (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) added a hat trick and a helper. Sophomore Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing Academy) had a goal and an assist, while senior Chrissy Norberg (Winchester, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) and sophomore Hannah Ferris (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) each scored once.
Junior keeper Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) made a pair of saves during nearly 18 minutes of action, while freshman Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) had seven stops in a little more than 42 minutes.
After Colburn scored the first goal of the game 1:49 into the contest, the Blue Knights forged ahead for good with three straight markers during a 54-second span. Wheaton edged to within one goal on five occasions, including 7-6 on a Colburn tally just before halftime.
With the Lyons down 10-6 early in the second stanza, Powers scored at the 27:21 mark before neither team scored again prior to Norberg with 17:22 to go. Whynot converted a Colburn feed to make the score 10-9 at 12:58, but SUNY Geneseo tallied six of the final seven goals during a 10:02 stretch during the final 12:24 of the contest.
The Lyons continue their season-opening run tomorrow evening against regional foe Western New England College at 7:00 p.m.
