Sixth-ranked Tufts pulls away from Wheaton during second half
MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team crept to within five goals early in the second half against sixth-ranked Tufts University before falling, 16-6 on Thursday at Bello Field. The Lyons are now 5-9 on the season, while the Jumbos, whose ranking is according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), are 10-2.
Sophomore Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord) accounted for half of Wheaton's offense, tallying a hat trick, while junior Tess Meyer (Concord, NH/Concord) turned in a goal and an assist. Sophomores Sabrina Fiori (Newton, MA/Beaver Country Day School) and Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing Academy) also scored, while freshman Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) made 12 saves in 51:59 of relief.
Sophomore Casey Egan (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) led Tufts with three goals and three assists, while senior Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) added a hat trick and two helpers. Junior Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ/Summit) earned the victory as one of two Jumbo keepers, neither of whom recorded a save during 30 minutes apiece of play.
The hosts tallied the first four goals of the game after 8:01 of action before Meyer got the Lyons on the board with 20:41 left in the opening half, but Tufts eventually took a 9-2 advantage into halftime. Colburn and Fiori tallied 42 seconds apart early in the second stanza to bring Wheaton within five, and Colburn twice quickly countered a Jumbo tally in the ensuing minutes, including creating an 11-6 margin at 20:20, before Tufts scored the last five markers.
The Lyons complete their regular season slate on Saturday by hosting 10th-ranked Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at 1:00 p.m.
