LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team trailed 4-2 with a little over 19 minutes to play in the opening half before succumbing to a 10-0 run and an eventual 21-7 loss to State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Tuesday night.
Junior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) accounted for over half of her team's goals with four, including a pair of free-position tallies. Freshman Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) added a pair of goals, while senior Tess Meyer (Concord, N.H./Concord) also scored.
Senior goalie Marianna Marcellino (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) played the bulk of time, earning 12 saves in 49:30 of action, while sophomore Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) suffered the loss after starting and turning aside one shot in 10:30.
After the Blue Knights found the back of the net 1:32 into play, the Lyons knotted the contest 20 seconds later. Wheaton remained in striking distance until SUNY Geneseo erupted for 10 straight goals over 25:07 to take a commanding 14-2 advantage. Each team scored a goal in the final 1:44 of the opening frame, as the Blue and White trailed 15-3 at the break.
Wheaton yielded a pair of second-half goals to find itself down 17-3 before going on a 4-0 run that made the score 17-7 with 15:37 to go. Colburn tallied twice during the stretch, however that seventh goal was the last for the Lyons, as the Blue Knights tacked on four goals in the final 7:46 to complete the scoring.
Wheaton turns right back around tomorrow for an afternoon game against Keene State College at 5:00 p.m.
