Nationally-ranked Amherst too strong for Wheaton in non-league action
NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday following a 16-2 loss to nationally-ranked Amherst College in a non-conference contest at Keefe Field.
The Lyons slip to 4-6, while the Lord Jeffs, who are ranked 18th in the country by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), improved to 5-3.
Senior Tess Meyer (Concord, N.H./Concord) and freshman Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) each scored for the hosts, while junior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) recorded an assist. Senior Marianna Marcellino (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) and sophomore Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made four saves apiece, with Marcellino taking the loss.
Amherst put forward a balanced scoring attack, with junior Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) leading the way with four goals. Freshman Annelies O'Dea (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland) turned in a hat trick, while four others had two tallies each, led by senior Kelley Trapp's (Monterey, Calif./Santa Catalina) two goals and two assists. Freshman MC McClellan (Denver, Colo./Episcopal) was credited with five stops.
The Lord Jeffs scored the game's first six goals and 15 of the initial 16 tallies, with sophomore Marta Randall (Monkton, Md./Hereford) picking up the winner 4:16 in. Meyer's goal at the 15:32 mark of the first half made the score 6-1 before the visitors scored the stanza's final three for a 9-1 advantage at the intermission. After Amherst began the second half on a 6-0 run, DeSantis converted Colburn's pass at 2:52. The Lord Jeff's final tally came at the buzzer.
Wheaton returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday with a road game at Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
