NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell behind 14-0 early in the second half before succumbing to nationally-ranked Bowdoin College by a 21-4 count during the Lyons' Senior Day in a non-conference game on Saturday at Keefe Field.
Wheaton dropped its third straight game to slip to 5-9, while the Polar Bears, who are ranked 12th nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improved to 9-2.
Juniors Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord), Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) and Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) and freshman Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) each scored for the Lyons, while senior Marianna Marcellino (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) made eight saves in net.
Thirteen different Bowdoin players found the back of the net, with junior Katie Herter (Topsfield, Mass./Brooks School) and freshman Jordan Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) recording a hat trick apiece. First-year Molly Popolizio (Rexford, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored once and handed out two assists, while sophomore goalie Alexandra Brown (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) made four saves.
After trailing 12-0 at the intermission, Wheaton scored two of the second half's first four tallies to maintain a 12-goal margin by the 22:12 mark. The Lyons were behind 17-4 following Colburn's 50th goal of the spring at 11:24 before the visitors tallied the game's final four markers during the last 9:36.
Wheaton is back in action on Tuesday with its final regular season road game, as the Lyons travel to Wellesley College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at 4:00 p.m.
