Skidmore Edges Wheaton, 11-10, In Double OT

Sharick scores go-ahead goal in second half 

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team was edged by Skidmore College, 11-10, in double overtime on Friday afternoon in non-conference action. 

Freshman Maggie Murphy (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored the game-winning goal at the 2:12 mark of the second overtime on a feed from junior Robin Fetterolf (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). Murphy potted two goals in the contest while senior Lexi Melville (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) led all scorers with five goals. 

Wheaton junior Leila Mills (Brunswick Maine/Brunswick) netted a team-high three goals, caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Charlotte De Santis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy), sophomore Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and senior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) added two goals and junior Hayley Bright (Cumberland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) registered one marker. 

In the second half, Sharick broke a 9-9 tie with her fifth goal of the season on a nice set up from freshman Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) with 3:09 remaining in the contest. Freshman Emma Harris (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) answered for the Thoroughbreds at the 2:06 mark to force overtime. 

Skidmore held a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first half scoring four unanswered goals after Wheaton went on a 3-0 run to open up the stanza. De Santis buried an unassisted tally at 28:48, Sharick scored with 25:11 on the scoreboard and Moreira found the back of the net at the 22:05 mark. 

The second half saw six ties and three lead changes as the Lyons outscored the Thoroughbreds, 7-6, and outshot their opposition, 13-10. Mills paced the Wheaton offense in the half with three goals. 

Skidmore sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Witheford (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) made a game-high ten saves. Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) stopped five shots. 

The Thoroughbreds won the draw controls matchup, 14-12, and went 11-for-11 on clear attempts. The Lyons posted a plus-11 margin in the turnover category and outshot Skidmore, 27-20. 

Wheaton (2-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Bridgewater State University in non-conference action on Tuesday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m. Skidmore (1-3) welcomes Wesleyan University to its campus on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
