Women's Lacrosse Upends Gordon, 12-5
Mills records six points in victory for Lyons
WENHAM, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team defeated Gordon College, 12-5, on Thursday evening in non-conference action.
Wheaton senior co-captain Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) led all scorers with a season-high six points on five goals and one assist. Junior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherts) recorded a hat trick, while sophomores Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk), Katherine Kowal (Ossining, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall), Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) recorded one goal, respectively.
Gordon sophomore Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) led the Fighting Scots with a hat trick and classmate Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlise) and senior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) each netted one goal apiece.
Wheaton junior Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) turned away two of seven shots and picked up her sixth win between the pipes. Gordon junior Julianne Kirkpatrick (Rochester,N.Y./Brighton) and freshman Holly O'Brien (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) combined for seven saves.
The Lyons finished with 12 ground balls and 12 draw controls, while the Fighting Scots compiled five ground balls and won seven draws. Wheaton senior co-captain Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) recorded a game-high three draw controls.
Wheaton converted 13 of 15 clears, while Gordon finished 13 of 19. The Lyons outshot the Fighting Scots, 24-9, and converted one of five free position shots.
Both teams swapped goals throughout the opening minutes of the first half before Cohen's strike at 18:59 initiated a 7-0 run spanning both halves, which provided the Lyons with the lead for good.
Grinnell halted the Lyons' run with back-to-back tallies at 25:25 and 24:09 in the second stanza before Wheaton answered with three consecutive markers to seal the win.
The Lyons and Fighting Scots have met 15 times since their first meeting in 1998 and tonight's victory was Wheaton's 12th against Gordon. Last season, Gordon defeated Wheaton in Norton, Mass. 10-9. The Lyons' last win against Gordon prior to this evening occurred in 2011 when Wheaton claimed a 17-9 victory at home.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 5 as Wheaton (6-5) travels to Emerson College for an 11 a.m. start, while Gordon (8-2) visits Endicott College for a 12 p.m. opening draw.
