Sabol records four points (3g, 1a)
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team defeated Emerson College, 7-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Wheaton sophomore Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) paced the Lyons with four points on three goals and one assist, while classmate Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) finished with two helpers and one strike. Senior Hayley Bright (Cumberland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy), sophomore Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) and freshman Hannah Gasperoni (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) all registered one goal.
Emerson freshman Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led the Lions with two tallies. Senior Kanika Misra (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) and sophomore Tayllar Righini (Salem, N.H./Salem) both found the back of the net once.
Wheaton junior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) turned away six shots and picked up her seventh win of the season. Emerson sophomore Victoria Kanaris (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) stopped 11 of 18 shots.
The Lyons scooped up 18 ground balls and converted 16 of 18 clears. Emerson collected 17 ground balls and finished 16 of 18 on clear attempts. Wheaton won eight draw controls, highlighted by senior co-captain Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic), who won four draws. Emerson notched five draw controls.
Both teams converted one free attempt shot, while Wheaton outshot Emerson, 22-12.
Trailing 3-2 late in the first half, Gasperoni jumpstarted a 5-0 run spanning both halves that provided the Lyons with the lead for good. Tewksbury netted the go-ahead goal with four seconds remaining in the opening session before Bright extended Wheaton's lead to two goals at 22:01 in the second half.
Sabol netted back-to-back goals at 21:54 and 13:22 before Emerson responded with its final tally 11 seconds later by Weber.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, April 8 when Wheaton travels to Babson College for a 4 p.m. start, while Emerson heads to Mount Holyoke for a 6 p.m. opening draw.
