Mallis and Sabol each score one goal in the setback
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell to No. 16 ranked Bowdoin College, 17-2, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.
Wheaton sophomore Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and freshman Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) each netted one goal, while junior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) turned away six shots.
Bowdoin senior Betsy Sachs (Glenside, Pa./Germantown Friends) and sophomore Megan O'Connor (Concord, Mass./The Governors Academy) scored four goals, respectively. Both junior Isabel Sippel (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and sophomore Ella Blanchon (Washington, D.C./Maret School) each appeared in net, but neither recorded a save.
Sabol netted the game's first goal following a pass from classmate Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) at 25:51 in the opening stanza before the Polar Bears answered with Sachs 21 seconds later, which initiated a 10-0 run that sealed the win for the hosts. Mallis scored the Lyons' second and final goal with 41 seconds remaining in the half.
Bowdoin finished with a game-high 15 ground balls and converted 16 of 18 clears. Wheaton scooped 11 ground balls and finished with eight clear attempts. The Polar Bears captured 14 draw controls, while Wheaton finished with seven. Bowdoin also outshot the Lyons, 26-4.
Both Wheaton and Bowdoin return to action later this week with the Lyons hosting Springfield College on Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m., while the Polar Bears travel to Southern Maine on Thursday, April 17 for a 4:30 p.m. start.
