NORTON, Mass. - First-year Molly Covarrubias tallied five goals and two assists as the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team defeated the Lasell College Lasers, 12-4, Sunday afternoon at Nordin Field in their home opener.
The Lyons advance to 1-1 overall while the Lasers drop to 1-1.
Also getting on the board for Wheaton was senior Giovanna Bishop (two goals, four assists), junior Megan Hemmerlein (one goal), sophomore Kennelly Allerton (one goal), senior Hannah Gasperoni (one goal), senior Lydia Regan (one goal) and senior Angela Mallis (one goal). Lasell was led by Taylor Yandow who earned two goals and one assist with Samantha Taylor and Jordan McComb also recording one goal apiece.
Lasell was first on the board to start the game with a good free position shot from Taylor at 24:21. Wheaton quickly responded less than a minute later with a goal from Covarrubias to tie it. The Lyons would go on to dish out three more goals before the Lasers responded at 12:21 with a goal, making it 4-2.
Wheaton closed out the first half with four more goals, ending when Covarrubias found Bishop to bring the Lyons ahead 8-3 entering halftime.
The Lasers recorded what would be their final goal of the game at 23:42 off a free position shot from Yandow. From there, Wheaton's offense would hold and maintain possession, notching four unanswered goals before the clock ran out.
Wheaton junior goalkeeper Molly Witten (1-1) listed one save while Lasell's goalkeeper Bridget Delaney tallied five and Brooke Bergeron snagged one.
Lasell held the 16-14 advantage on ground balls, while Wheaton held the 12-6 mark on draw controls.
Wheaton hosts Keene State next on Thursday with game time set for 4 p.m.
