GRAND LAKE, Colo. - First-year Molly Covarrubias has been named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Berkshire Regional Second-Team as announced by the association office on Friday.
The IWLCA has honored 256 student-athletes in Division III with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2017. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Friday, May 19. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American Banquet on Saturday June 3, 2017 at the Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, Md.
Covarrubias is just one of 18 freshmen to be named to an all-region team, while being just one of nine New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) athletes to make the list. Covarrubias also becomes the first Wheaton first-year women's lacrosse player to earn an all-region honor.
The first-year attack, who was recently named the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year, made an immediate impact for the Lyons this season, playing in and starting 17 games, en route to a 32 goal season. The first-year also contributed 20 assists, ending the season with a team-high 52 points. Covarrubias also picked up 17 ground balls, while winning 38 draw controls and causing nine turnovers. She was also named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First-Team.
Wheaton concluded the season 9-9 overall and 6-2 in NEWMAC action.
