BRISTOL, R.I. - Senior Alessia Viscomi (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and sophomore Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central) scored second-half goals in helping the Wheaton College women's soccer team overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and post a 2-1 win in its season opener at Roger Williams University on Thursday.
The Lyons, who are receiving national votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll, defeated the Hawks in their season opener for the third straight year.
Muse, who led the Lyons with 15 goals a year ago, scored her first goal of 2010 just 3:13 into the second half to tie the score at one. Viscomi tallied the game-winner with 34:28 remaining, and the Lyons held on for the victory.
Senior Emily Hough (Norwich, Vt./Hanover) assisted on both Lyons' goals. Hough moved into a tie for fifth place in program history with 35 career assists. Sophomore Samantha Cronin (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) also collected an assist on the game-winner, taking the corner kick to help set up Viscomi's score.
Freshman Kerry Condon (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) earned her first career win in net for the Lyons, playing the second half in relief of junior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School). Condon made two saves, while Leddy had five.
Junior Laurin Pendelton (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Rolland Regional) scored the only goal for Roger Williams. Classmate Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) collected an assist. Sophomore Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) made two saves for the Hawks, who held a 19-13 edge in shots.
